This hugely exciting and funny play is set in New York in the 1990’s. It’s modern, edgy, and will be a huge challenge, because ‘Sylvia’ is a dog, played by a woman!!
Greg and Kate are adjusting to life after children. Kate's career as an academic is taking off, while Greg is being transferred to ever more meaningless and unsatisfying work. During a walk in the park, Greg finds an adorable pooch with a tag indicating her name is Sylvia. Perhaps she finds him. He brings her home, fleas and all.
Sylvia immediately establishes herself as Greg's constant companion. She does what pets do: she's loves him unconditionally. She's frisky and playful, tireless, loves to be petted, and hangs on his every word. Kate recognizes a rival for Greg's affections and a threat to her marriage. Soon Greg must choose between wife and dog. It is not an easy decision for him.
This is an unusual play, for the clever commentary on life and love in the middle years; sometimes poignant, sometimes ‘howlingly’ funny. You will never look at Fido or Fifi the same way again.
